DIRECTOR - BIO

Renée Beaulieu holds a PhD in film studies, a diploma in screenwriting from the Institut national de l'image et du son de Montréal, and is a pharmacist. She wrote, produced, directed, and edited her first three feature films, with a unique style, subjects rarely addressed in cinema, and a direct, frontal point of view. In 2007, she wrote the screenplay for THE RING. Her credits include LE GARAGISTE (2015), LES SALOPES OU LE SUCRE NATUREL DE LA PEAU (2018), and INES (2021).

DIRECTOR'S WORD

Being at Home is the fifth feature film I've written, and my fourth as a director and producer. Since the beginning of my career, I've strived to be a free artist, and my independent films reflect my personal vision of cinematic subjects and aesthetics. I want to build a body of work based on this freedom of artistic expression. What I want is to escape the scriptwriting and cinematographic formatting that reduces the film to a simple product intended to satisfy a target audience from a commercial perspective.

My film, Being at Home, is part of my artistic approach that began in the early 2000s. I first made short films, then my first feature film in 2008 (Le Ring), followed by others in 2015 (Le garagiste), 2018 (Les salopes ou le sucre naturel de la peau) and 2022 (Inès).

This project explores the theme of family, with its complexity of intra-family ties that evolve over time. It is a tender, complex, luminous love story, with its gray areas between brothers and sisters, parents and grandparents. The film also takes a look at the house, the one we build, the one we live in, the one we leave for studies, because of a separation, old age, death, the one where we are born... The house becomes a symbol, a shelter, a prison, a gift...
