Amid the joy and fatigue of her quinceañera, fifteen-year-old Cecilia begins to question whether her future lies in Yegolé or beyond its borders.
Synopsis - short
In Yegolé, a village in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, Cecilia celebrates her quinceañera — a traditional Mexican coming-of-age celebration for fifteen-year-old girls —surrounded by her family and community. Through the beauty and weariness of both festivity and everyday life, Cecilia feels a growing tension within her: to stay or to leave Yegolé, as she approaches adulthood.
Synopsis - long
After a first stay in Yegolé, where I met the López Sánchez family with my sister, I was deeply moved by Cecilia’s dilemma: remaining in her village, close to nature and her loved ones, or leaving for other urban horizons. Invited to her quinceañera, the traditional Mexican celebration of a young girl’s fifteenth birthday, I felt compelled to film both the daily life of Cecilia and her family, as well as the way they elevate it through celebration. Seeking less to explain than to let something emerge, the film moves between fiction and documentary, dream and reality, the everyday and the festive, allowing the viewer the freedom to interpret Cecilia’s search for balance.

DIRECTOR - BIO
A native of Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, Renaud Gélinas is an emerging filmmaker now based in Montreal. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in cinema from the Université de Montréal in 2023, he directed several short films, including The Wind Will Carry Her (2024) and, more recently, Yégolé, mi amor, a docu-fiction shot in the Oaxaca region of Mexico. His cinema explores the complexity of human relationships, memory, and our connection to the environment, all within an aesthetic that oscillates between mystery and realism.
